Durban, Day One!

Last year, we opted to forego a Christmas bonus for our staff and instead plan a week long retreat/vacation for them to Durban, South Africa! There were many steps involved in this process: a good financial year for New Day, a team willing to come and help run the orphanage for a week while all of our staff were gone, and the Zambian government issuing passports for our staffers! All of the above were accomplished thanks to God, and we headed out Monday morning (on a not-flooded bridge!) for the trip to Durban!

5:45am in the back of the truck headed down to the bridge to load up the minibus! (Yes, that is my "airplane" outfit!)

Excitement was in the air! (= Hildah talked the whole time, loudly!!)

Excited, but sleepy!

Papa & Mama Tembo ready to go!

Mirriam and Hildah unloading at the Livingstone airport!

Helping Mirriam check in!

Mulenga, acting like a pro. He was VERY calm the whole day - that's Mulenga!

Chugging water before going through security!

This is what my face looked like for pretty much all of Monday. I promise I relaxed once we arrived at our hotel that night!

Melvin was SOOO excited!

Waiting to board in Livingstone!

Mama Zelly showing off her rand!

Most everyone wanted to sit by the window, except for Mama Tembo who didn't want to see ANYTHING! I have so many funny stories...where to start?!

Mama Catherine

Hildah was my seat buddy...for 2 flights. Oh this girl! She was absolutely giddy and drifted between acting like a 9 year old and a drunk person for most of the flight! She clung to me, squealed, answered back to the intercom every time they spoke as if they were talking directly to her, yelled at things out the window, etc. I can't even begin to describe it!!

Loveness kept saying, "My heart is up here!" pointing to her neck! You have to remember, she had never even been on an elevator or experienced the feeling of your stomach dropping! We hit some big bumps and they all went crazy! Here she is grabbing the arm of a random 18 year old next to her, who was quite amused by all of this!

Mirriam was scared, but Mulenga very calmly told her she needed to remind herself that she was already on the plane, and if it crashed, there was nothing she could do. Thanks for that, Mulenga.

Papa Tembo loved it and loved looking out at the clouds. At one point, he told Mama Tembo, "Look out the window. This must be what it was like for Jesus when He went up into the clouds." After hitting a bump, she responded with, "No! Now we are going up to heaven too!"

Wes, Laurie, and Liz, who loved it!

We are so blessed to have Mark & Sheila Bagwell leading our retreat this week! They shared a seat with Yolantah.

After all the walking through Johannesburg airport, Hildah needed a boost!

She put her feet up as we all waited for the flight to Durban!

Chatting away!

At one point, Melvin forgot that he had checked his bag and thought he had lost it! The sheer panic in his face when he thought he left his bag in the bathroom almost did me in! Until...the moving sidewalks...
.
Let's just say, Mama Catherine took a tumble...rolled down the moving sidewalk...and it's all on video. PRICELESS.

We had to take two separate flights to Durban, so one group arrived about 2 hours before the other group. We got checked into our hotel, ordered pizza to be delivered and had a cappuccino, had a quick pizza party in our room, and everyone crashed early. It was a day I will never forget!!
