Around here...

Here is a look at what has been happening around here the past week! Laurie has a new phone that makes it very easy for her to upload pictures and videos, so she is making my life easier by capturing a lot of what is going on around us!

Fun at the fish pond last Thursday trying to catch fish! Poor Joseph wanted in on the action, but Baby Justin didn't want him to leave his side! What a good big brother!

Let's catch some fish!

Teacher Darbi trying to keep Stanley from jumping in...

This is the plot of land where my parents will live, which they have named Happy Hollow! It is about 80 yards from our house...is this for real?! So excited!

The kids come with the house.. ;)

Homework time - Emma was pretty content to do homework with Caedmon & Kelitah!

During library time, the New Day "middle" girls noticed Axer on the cover of Rosemont Baptist Church's mission magazine and loved looking inside! They recognized some New Day faces, along with Lexi, Uncle Adam, and Mallory!

The first week of school is in the books! Teacher Abby (who is also our substitute house mother for the boys right now) has a lot of classes but does a great job!

Cynthia & Kelitah give Teacher Carolyn a massage!

Madalitso has his own classroom and still teaches a lot of the Pre-K classes - he also recently accepted Christ as his Savior!

Teacher Melvin is so excited to have his own classroom - he is a great teacher!

2nd grade!

In my Guided Reading group (Cynthia, Francis, Misheck, and Muchoni), we read a book called "Let's Make Silly Soup." After discussing the ingredients, we decided to make it ourselves! Cynthia put in the pork chop!

According to the recipe, they had to dance around the pot for it to cook right!

Misheck added the mustard!

Squishy peas for Muchoni!

And after adding oatmeal, coke, a tangerine, cheese, macaroni, baloney, pickles, jelly beans, and jam... and then boiling it for an hour...it was time to taste!

Ben LOVED it...I promise we feed them 3 good meals a day plus a snack here!

Cambree...not so much..

A tiny bite for Misheck!

I love hearing the kids yell, "Aunt Staci!!!" and run up to her for a hug :)

Brian, our volunteer team cook, was recently hired on as the overseer of the New Day kitchen! We are excited to have him and his family at New Day! (They will stay in The Ark until Palace #2 is built)

Kelitah and Brian's baby, Isva (Chimunya). He also has a 6 year old named Ingrid

His wife, Macdrena (Magdalena) is so happy to be here!

Meanwhile, we also have 2 college volunteers who are in their last year of college doing a 6 month internship with us. They are required to stay in a village, eating Zambian food, living with no running water or electricity, in a hut, with a Zambian family, for one month! They are adjusting well and doing great in the village, but we will be excited to have them back at New Day in a few weeks!

Priscilla teaching them to make homemade buns (customers come to her door to buy them each day)

They are living in a small hut at Maxwell & Priscilla's village.

Unasked Answers

We talk a lot about "unanswered prayers," but lately my mind has been drawn to "unasked answers." There have been several things that God has blown me away with lately, and they were all things that I had thought in my mind that I would love, but that I had never thought to ask Him for. What a sweet reminder that He cares about the tiniest details of our lives and is eager to heap blessings upon blessings upon us, even when we don't think to ask.

Unasked Answer #1

My teaching schedule was pretty full last year, and I found it difficult to fit in time to do a good job with New Day finances. The finances take me about an hour each day to do, and I really need QUIET to do a good job (not my 3 kids screaming at me or me trying to do homework with them, cook supper, and record the daily expenses!) I mentioned to Blu that I would love to find one hour of uninterrupted time during the day when the kids are at school to get this done, but I never thought to actually pray to God for that hour. Lo and behold, Laurie wrote me on facebook about a month ago with the new school schedule. I was shocked to see that I have every day from 11:30-12:30 OFF while my kids are in school! It felt like a whisper from God, "I know what you need before you even ask Me."

Unasked Answer #2

I have regretted in the past that I haven't spent enough time with our Zambian staff. Hildah and I especially have been friends since 2003, but I don't get to spend a lot of time with her. I mentioned to Blu that I would love to be able to spend more time with her, but if I did, something else would suffer - time with my family, time I should be doing something else, time I just didn't feel like I had. Again, I never thought to pray about this. Our first Saturday back, at 3pm when it was time for Kids Club, Hildah showed up. She had been helping with Kids Club the whole time we were gone, and we sat and visited for 90 minutes as we watched the kids play. She said that she has loved helping and would like to continue. Last week, same thing. 90 uninterrupted minutes to talk with Hildah, laugh with her, and encourage each other. God knew I needed this, knew I desired it, and even thought I didn't ask, He made it happen.

Unasked Answer #3

Ok, this one is a little silly, but Y'ALL....I found gluten free cake flour in Lusaka last week! Like a huge bag! I have been on a gluten free diet since August due to a weak positive test for gluten sensitivity, and going gluten free has definitely helped. I knew I could buy almond flour (very pricy) here and coconut flour, but this was a giant bag of just regular, gluten free flour. I was blown away! And quickly made gluten free chocolate chip cookies! And ate them all in 2 days. Yikes. :)

I was so excited about these unasked answers, but I was a little convicted too. Why is it that we think God only cares about our "big" requests. Someone has cancer? I'm on my knees. Blu is traveling to Lusaka? I'm praying all day for safety. My kids' future spouses? I pray for them daily. But I think we sometimes forget how He wants to lavish His love upon us, even in the little things. It's easy to see this on Day 12 of our term, but it might not be so easy on Day 377. That's why I made myself sit down and record these blessings, so I can look back and be reminded of His love.

Back at New Day - back to work!

Well, we are back! Our internet is very slow and is costing us quite a bit to connect right now until our wifi is back up and running, so I haven't been on the computer much except for work-related emails/financials and a few quick updates, but I thought it is about time for a blog! Life at New Day is much how I remember it - HOT! :) It has been 80-90 in our house with only one small rain shower since we arrived. January & February is the month where our little bridge always floods, and we were shocked to see NO water under it - just sand as if it is the dry season. This is NOT good for our farmers or for the hydroelectric dam - please pray for rain for Zambia!

After a whirlwind of unpacking, closing out 2015 finances, and getting moved into a new classroom, I was ready for some routine this morning and was thrilled to get up at 5am for my morning quiet time and 1.5 mile run! Blu was off to Choma to do grocery shopping for NDO, and just like that - we're back! :)

Hotel breakfast in Livingstone - this happy girl found a mango!

Shopping...with the kids...without Blu...in jet lag.. :)

What to do when Daddy is gone? Milkshakes with Mama!

Aaaahhhh...finally back with their friends!

Cambree & Laurie

I love this picture...our kids (and the oldest New Day kids) have literally grown up in this shelter..hours and hours of games, school, Bible stories, etc.

Blu could not WAIT to get back and see his beloved trees! Apparently our mango tree and peach tree both bore fruit, and the flamboyant tree has buds and little red flowers on it!

His jacaranda tree is now the tallest in the yard! (planted 5 years ago)

Back to cooking from scratch! People ask if it's a hard adjustment, but it's really not, because there's no other option. You either cook or you starve! This is last night's supper of sausage/rice jambalaya, red beans, and roasted butternut squash.

Let the school year begin! Caedmon - 6th grade, Cambree - 5th grade (finishing up some of 4th), and Cason - 2nd grade (he already did the first half in the USA so hopefully he won't drive his teachers crazy) :)

And my first day too! I am teaching 4th-6th Math, 5th Language Arts (Cambree), Computer Class on Fridays, and Guided Reading in the afternoons.

Cason thought we should have a picture together on the first day :)

Morning assembly time on our pretty new sidewalks! Yes, it was 7:45am and the sun was SHINING!

My 4th Grade Math class

I love my new classroom!

Fight Back with Joy

We are back in Zambia!! This trip was one for the record books, that's for sure! I thought several times about getting my camera out and taking a picture, but I usually take pictures and blog things because I want to remember them...and these 3 days I would love to forget! Here are a few of our adventures!

We got to the airport about 6 hours early, and it's a good thing we did! The first thing the gate lady asked me was, "You don't have any computers in your checked luggage, do you??" "Um, yes...we have 8 computers we are taking back to the orphanage." She then told us we couldn't check lithium batteries in the computers, so we had to search through our 14 bags and pull out the batteries. We had luggage strewn everywhere (yes, we were THAT family...) trying to find them and could only find 5. She said, "Oh well, that's ok!" Ok.... So anyway, on to the handgun. Blu spent a lot of time this furlough working on getting his license to carry so that he could bring a handgun (that was given to him) back to Zambia. He called numerous offices, people, etc, to try to make sure he was doing everything right. He called American Airlines a week prior to let them know we had a handgun in one bag and a small amount of ammunition in the other. They assured us that was all we needed to do. (He had already checked on what to do from the Zambian side upon arrival). At this point, the lady tells us that we can't carry the handgun, and she gets on the phone with British Air. They tell Blu that no, he had to let them know about the handgun 48 hours in advance of the flight. That's what we thought we were doing with American Air, but obviously not! We called our pastor in Alvarado who thankfully knew a guy in the area who met us at the airport in 20 minutes to pick up the forsaken handgun. (My poor Blu had such a dejected look on his face!) After this, we found our 2 interns, Jamee & Kailyn, and proceeded to lose Teacher Carolyn for a very long time due to differing gates printed on our boarding passes!

Ok fast forward our 8 hour flight, 4 hour layover, and 11 hour flight and we were pretty exhausted upon our arrival to South Africa. The immigration/security process is pretty simple, so we didn't foresee any problems, until one of our backpacks got held up in the line. (This backpack cleared security at DFW and London Heathrow with no problems!) Apparently, Cason found some shotgun shells at his grandparents' house a few weeks ago and put them in his school backpack to take to school for show and tell. He forgot they were there, we had no idea, but security sure figured it out pretty fast! The thing is, they didn't understand that these were empty shotgun shells - all they knew was that we were trying to sneak 3 bullets onto the airplane.) My stomach dropped because I knew this meant that Blu was in serious trouble. They told us to all step aside while they called the police. It was pretty terrifying. A man in a uniform came about 10 minutes later, and you could tell that he understood the situation. He came over and joked with me that they were going to lock Blu up, but in reality, they just needed to go and file a police report. We waited while they did this, and Blu told me that the man apologized but said they would have to strip search him per procedure. Yikes! Thankfully, when the supervisor saw the shells, he said it wasn't necessary.

Whew! What a relief! We went to enjoy some Mugg n' Bean and wait for our flight to show up on the board. Our flight got closer...and closer...and finally about 10 minutes to boarding it came up telling us what gate to go to. When we got there, we were the last ones in line (because we printed our boarding passes back on Monday, the first day of travel, not today, so a gate hadn't been chosen yet). As we go to check in, they stop Blu and tell him that his luggage had been flagged. They do not allow bb guns or ammunition in checked bags, and he has to physically go down and remove them himself. There is no way he will make the flight, so we all stand there dumbfounded until the gate agent says, "I think your wife and children should go. You will have to go tomorrow." If you know me, you know I have pretty big travel anxiety, and I do much better with Blu by my side. But I put on my brave face, grabbed the 10 carryons and the 3 kids, and headed to the bus to get on the plane. At this point, everyone was grumbling as I climbed onto the plane (literally...climbed up stairs with 10 bags, running back and forth to get them all up) (yes...we are THAT family...again...) I tried not to cry as I tried to find room for the luggage and finally sat down - the kids were asleep in about 30 seconds.

From there, we had to fly to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe for a quick turn-around. That turned into an hour on the runway in the un-airconditioned plane due to a passenger with immigration issues. We finally took off again, and 10 minutes later we landed in Livingstone! Thankfully, we flew through immigration, all of our remaining luggage was there, Carolyn & the girls (& Diana) got through with no problems, and I have never been so happy to see Wes Wilcox in my life!!!! He loaded up everything and made the decision that we would all stay overnight in a hotel, with them leaving in the morning after a grocery run and me and the kids staying to pick up Blu.
.
So back to Blu - the deal with the bb gun/ammo was that British Air in London has no rules and allows those things. However, the British Air branch in South Africa does not. So when we called, we spoke to a London rep who didn't think about the South African difference, and thus the confusion in South Africa. Blu solved the problem by switching airlines completely to South African Airways, who has no rules regarding ammunition or bb guns, so tomorrow at 12:20pm, we will pick him up and head to New Day.

whew! I am exhausted after typing all of that! As I sit here tonight in jet lag, on our 15th anniversary, with all 3 of my kiddos piled onto the double bed with their ipads on and no sleep in their near future, I am choosing to fight back with joy. It would be easy to sink into self-pity, loneliness, or just complete frustration at how things always seem to go wrong in 3rd world countries! But that's what Satan wants. He wants me to start this term defeated. He wants me to go back tomorrow focused on myself and my problems. Instead, I choose to fight back with joy. I choose to fight back with contentment. I choose to rejoice in the fact that we are here, we are safe, and we are called according to His purpose. And we know God works all things together for good to those who are called according to His purpose.
I made it to 6:30pm. Bedtime.

And at 3:50am I am up with jeg lag, rereading this and laughing at some of my "jet lag" mistakes!
