Chattanooga, Tennessee Team!

We have enjoyed having Kit & Mary Ann, Robert, Becky, & Jeremy here from Tennessee this week! They have spent each day out in the villages of Nabukowa and Kabanga doing Bible storying. They are each telling stories and we are so impressed with how smoothly it is going and how much time they obviously spent in preparation for this! The people are having good discussions and asking a lot of questions - we know that this team has planted seeds that we will be able to see grow in coming years! Robert teaching in the village
Mary Ann loved holding the babies!
I love little Laurie :)
Kit is an amazing teacher - I love this picture with the hut in the background!
He also taught Sunday School AND preached this morning at New Day Church!
Kalenga showing off his kitchen :)
17 year old Jeremy teaching a Bible story
He also killed a rabbit one night with one shot!
And the New Day kitchen served it the next day!
Francis (all of the boys really!) loves riding Caedmon's bike!
Cason, our little ham
Cambree with her two front teeth missing
Caedmon says he's growing his hair out LONG!
Blu & Darbi at church this morning - we were squinting because of the wind!
Becky teaching her Bible story
and hugging a baby! :)

Happy Birthday Misheck & Gertrude!

All 18 New Day kids at the birthday party!
Caedmon & Muchoni jamming on the drums!
Misheck with his cake :) He turned 8 years old!
Misheck's gift from his sponsor, Allison
Misheck loved getting water poured on him!
It was Robert from Tennessee's birthday too so he was not exempt from the New Day water pouring tradition!
Gertrude, Robert, & Misheck all WET!
Gertrude arrived on Tuesday, and she turned 5 years old on Friday!
She giggled when she opened her presents! She is SUCH a ham! She loves to sing and make faces and she reminds me of a miniature Kalenga!! :)
This was Gertrude's first time to eat cake - and use a fork!!
Poor Gertrude wasn't exempt from the water pouring either, but we went easy on her! :)

Gertrude Arrives!

Gertrude, a 5 year old orphan whose parents both died before she was 3 years old, arrived at New Day today! She is a talker and was so excited to come here! She peppered Wes & Laurie with questions the whole way here - "Will I have my own bed? Who will I sleep with? Do you see my dress? It is my best dress!" She was so excited to get new clothes and shoes and lined them up on the floor to admire them. :) We are excited to welcome Gertrude to our New Day family!

Aunt Gin

My aunt passed away this morning at 12:17am Texas time. She leaves behind two children, Stacey in Michigan, and Shanna in El Paso, and two grandchildren, Alexander and Stacey II. She also leaves behind her 3 brothers, Charlie, Ron (my dad), & James, and 1 sister, Kay, and 15 nieces and nephews. Aunt Ginny taught me how to drive a standard, (yelling when I repeatedly knocked her big tea cup into her lap), came to my piano recitals, taught me the song American Pie, played countless games of cards with me, checked my blog every day, made all of the flowers for my wedding, brought my kids jelly beans, and...most recently, told me how proud she was of what we were doing at New Day. And, (she would know if I left this out), she witnessed the single most embarrassing experience of my life in 7th grade. And videotaped it. And reminded me constantly of this videotape. :) Our family appreciates your prayers as her death was sudden and unexpected. My dad will be preaching her funeral. Thanks for praying.

New Day Baptism!

Today was New Day's baptism service! The church met for Sunday School and singing and then we all walked a mile down to the river for the baptisms! Here is the group watching and singing before Kalenga starts.

Our New Day kids love to read!
On Fridays the kids all wear their soccer uniforms. Here they are watching Peter Pan at 6:45am before school starts!
This was what we woke up to in our backyard!
Have you ever thought your house wasn't big enough? We drove by this one in Choma and I had to take a picture.

Aunt Ginny

When you read this, would you say a prayer for my Aunt Ginger? She had a blood clot in her brain last Friday, and though the surgery was successful, she is struggling now. We are praying for a miracle in the next 24-48 hours. I am so glad we were able to get to spend time with her (taught her a new card game!) when we were in Texas a few weeks ago. Thank you for praying!

A Tuesday around New Day

This morning, Laurie is putting the final touches on her women's Bible study for this afternoon. I worked on closing out the receipts for August and then remembered that I needed to finish the sponsor board in the dining hall, so I made my way to that side of the orphanage campus. It's getting HOT! As I did, I stopped by the school to listen in on what was going on. I didn't take my camera because I didn't want to disrupt the learning. (Ok, actually, I forgot my camera :) In Hildah's classroom, the Stars Class (ages 4-5) were having play time on the rug. They each had lego trucks and were zooming them around. What surprised me was that Hildah was on the floor with them, and as they were playing and chattering away (especially Christina!), Hildah was making up a story about a doctor riding in his truck to visit sick kids. She explained how he gave them medicine that they had to take at certain times of the day. It was amazing to hear her constantly teaching, even during playtime! In the next classroom, Abby had the Sunshine Class (Kindergarten) working on some early cursive writing. She was leaned over Kelitah's desk helping her make an "e." The Moonlight and Rainbow groups (1st and 2nd) were outside in the shelter having Tutorials with Elizabeth. Ms. Carolyn was on a rare break so she was getting the mid-morning snack ready for the 17 kids. Kalenga was washing dishes in the kitchen, but he was in his church clothes because on Tuesdays he also teaches a 30 minute music class to the kids. I could see Noah in Martha the Cow's pen, doing something or other that you do with cows I guess. :) She is supposed to calve on Sept 17th! I also saw Mulenga working on roof trusses for the new school building at his house, so I decided to stop by the new school. I hadn't been in it since it's been completed and I was blown away by the huge size of the classrooms! I wandered over to the library and was also shocked at how much bigger it is once you are inside! The plasterers are almost finished there and we can start priming and painting! Blu was chiseling the last electrical wire to go into the wall. Blu decided I should continue my tour over to the agriculture side of New Day, which I hadn't seen since May! We stopped at the new chicken house, which now has a dividing wall. Apparently there really is such a thing as a "pecking order", and our old layers did NOT like the new ones! We were excited to see a few eggs in the chicken house! We then stopped at the rabbit hutches to visit "Mama Lala," "Papa Wes", and our other 6 rabbits. They are SOOOO cute, and I"m not really an animal person!! :) I was surprised at all that has been done to get these animals a nice play to stay, and the new rabbit feeders are nice! We found Debbie in her hut, on a quick break, as she also teaches two 30 minute blocks on Tuesday mornings. She walks the kids around the land, collecting eggs, feeding animals, and teaching them how to care for them. The kids love it! We then walked over to check on our 3 goats, 2 of which are pregnant! They were wandering about, but we found Wes in the goat pen, putting sliding wooden slat doors on each of the 3 stalls for the goats. Next door the turkeys were fighting in their pen, but I was shocked to see a cement "pond" for our ducks! A lot has happened with the animals in 3 months! Now it's back home for me - gotta get lunch ready for when the kids are out of school, and then review my own women's Bible study for this afternoon at Mapanza Baptist. Hope you enjoyed the trip around New Day! :)

Dreams

During our testimony time in church on Sunday, Royd stood up and shared a dream he had recently. In the dream, there were people all around him with all kinds of swords, spears, and weapons. They then asked who there believed in God. Royd was the only one who raised his hand, and they went through his things and found a Bible. They then began to chase Royd and he was terrified. When they were about to overtake him, he looked ahead of him and saw Mulenga. Mulenga turned around and saw him and threw him a Bible. Royd caught it and turned around to find that the men with the weapons were gone. :)

We are all excited to begin our last term of the school year today! Our kids have had a great year and are blessed with awesome teachers! :)
